The History of Extreme Championship Wrestling
- The company started as Eastern Championship Wrestling. When Shane Douglas won the NWA World Title Tournament on August 30, 1994 he threw down the belt and proclaimed himself the first Extreme Championship Wrestling Champ (he was the current Eastern Championship Wrestling Champ). This event is the generally accepted promotional name change.
- In 2003, WWE purchased the intellectual property of the bankrupt ECW. The promotion's full time revival in 2006 was in name only as the WWE version of ECW is almost a parody of what it was in its orginal incarnation. Only shows promoted as strictly ECW or those that were combined ECW and WWE TV tapings are listed. The handful of "Hardcore Homecoming" shows promoted by Shane Douglas are also listed.
- This page is in no way affiliated with any professional wrestling company. It exists for the sole purpose of providing a source of information on the history of Extreme Championship Wrestling.

- I'd like to give the standard disclaimers associated with any wrestling "facts." Promoters tend to exaggerate so it is sometimes difficult to get accurate information. Some sources have slightly differing information on match times, attendance, etc. Just remember, that in wrestling, many facts are negotiable.
- A few notes about various numbers listed:
- All attendances are for the number of fans in the building, not the number who actually paid.
- I've attempted to list the matches in the order they occurred.
- A special thanks goes out to the following people:
- Dave Meltzer (Wrestling Observer Newsletter) - for producing such a great publication that has been a valuable resource.
- Royal Duncan & Gary Will - the editors of Wrestling Title Histories.
- Tod Gordon & Paul Heyman - the man who started ECW and the man who turned it into the most influential promotion of the 1990s.
